The Snowman Trek in Bhutan stands out as one of the most exquisite journeys in the entire Himalayas. Renowned for its formidable challenges in terms of altitude, duration, and distance, this alpine expedition sees far fewer adventurers completing it compared to those who conquer Mount Everest in Nepal. Traversing the northern regions of Bhutan along the border with Tibet, this trek entails crossing thirteen majestic Himalayan mountain passes, some soaring as high as 5230 meters. Commencing with the initial leg of the trek following the well-trodden paths of the Jumolhari and Laya-Gasa routes until Laya, you’ll be rewarded with awe-inspiring vistas of Mount Jumolhari, Jichu Drake, Masangang, Tiger Mountain, Gangkar Puensum, and numerous other prominent peaks adorning the northern frontier.

Day 1: Arrival Paro

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a T8 Untrodden Travels representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal, holding a placard with your name on it. The representative will greet you in the traditional manner by offering a Trashi Khadar (greeting scarf), and will be your guide for the entire tour.

After lunch, you will embark on an exciting sightseeing tour around Paro, starting with a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum. This museum houses an impressive collection of religious relics, works of art, and handicrafts that offer a great introduction to Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. You will then visit the Rimpong Dzong, a majestic fortress-monastery that houses the famous painting of the great saint Milarepa. These dzongs are not only important religious centers but also serve as district administrative centers, which were once strategic forts. The tour is a great opportunity to explore Bhutan’s rich history and culture.

Day 2: Hike to Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest

After breakfast, embark on a hike to the famous Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest. This uphill trek takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and leads you to a height of almost 1 kilometer above the Paro valley floor. For those who cannot hike, a horse ride can be arranged for transfer up to the cafeteria. The monastery, built on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor, offers a breathtaking view. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated here for three months, bringing the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th century.

In the afternoon, visit the almost fully reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, built by Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Jomolhari, which appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit other sights in the valley.

Day 3: Paro – Gunitsawa – Thangthangkha

Begin your day with an early breakfast, and then embark on a scenic drive of 35 kilometers north from your hotel in Paro valley to reach Sharna Zampa, the starting point of your trek. As you arrive, your trekking crew will be ready to greet you. Following a brief meeting, you will commence your trail, experiencing a mix of ascents and descents through enchanting pine, oak, and spruce forests. After around 2 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will arrive at Shingkharap, a stone house nestled at an altitude of 3110 meters. Here, a delicious hot lunch awaits you on the left side of the river, after crossing the bridge. Continuing on, you will encounter a trail junction where the left path signifies an ancient trade route and invasion path from Tibet, while the right path leads to a wooden bridge (which we will follow). As you ascend through rhododendron forests and cross the bridge once again, you will arrive at our campsite situated at 3750 meters, surrounded by picturesque meadows.

Day 4: Thangthangkha – Jangothang

While today’s trekking distance may not be long, you will gain significant altitude as the trail ascends above the tree line, reaching 3700 meters. Setting off from the camp, you will begin by climbing for a while until you reach the army camp. From there, you will follow the river, delighting in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks as you venture above the tree line. The trail may get muddy in certain sections, but you will soon pass a mani wall and enter the domain of yaks. A warm and satisfying lunch awaits you within a yak herder’s camp. After replenishing your energy, you will continue your journey, passing by yak herder settlements such as Soe and Takethang. These areas are known for cultivating crops like barley, potatoes, and turnips. As you make your final approach, you will traverse a plateau and ascend a stream bed, eventually arriving at the remarkable Jangothang campsite, situated at an elevation of 4040 meters. From this vantage point, the views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake are truly magnificent.

Day 5: Jangothang Explorations

On this day, you will dedicate your time to an essential acclimatization hike, lasting approximately four hours, towards the northern direction of the campsite. Although there is practically no designated trail, you will ascend an open and seemingly endless slope until you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Mt. Jichu Drake (6989m). For those seeking an even more spectacular vantage point, it is possible to scramble further up to an altitude of 4895m, surpassing the height of Mount Blanc, and witness the astounding sight of Mount Jumolhari. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for sightings of rare blue sheep, Himalayan rhubarb, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and the remarkable blue poppy. The Jangothang base is a vast grassy expanse with an ancient ruined fortress perched atop a hillock in the foreground, framed by the colossal presence of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. As the altitude here poses a risk of mountain sickness, it is highly recommended for all trekkers to rest and acclimatize at this stage. Whether you choose to explore the various hiking options available or simply unwind and relax within the camp, this day is bound to be etched in your memory as a truly remarkable experience.

Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi

The trail initially traces the stream for about half an hour before crossing a bridge to the right side. From there, embark on a climb towards the first ridge, which rewards you with a truly breathtaking vista of Jumolhari (7314m), Jichu Drake (6989m), and Tsherim Gang (6789m). Continuing onward, the path meanders through the valley, offering a relatively flat terrain for a while, until you ascend to the Ngye La pass at an altitude of 4700m. Once you have crossed the pass, a gradual descent awaits, allowing you to savor the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the majestic Lingshi Dzong. Tomorrow, you will have the opportunity to make a detour to explore this small fortress, perched atop a hill and overlooking the village of Lingzhi below. The campsite for the day is nestled at an altitude of 4010m, providing a serene and picturesque setting for your overnight stay.

Day 7: Lingshi – Chebisa

Today’s journey is a pleasant and leisurely walk, allowing you to immerse yourself in the scenic beauty of the surrounding villages and the tranquil camps of yak herders. After a delightful lunch, a short stroll will lead you to Chebisa, a charming little village adorned with a captivating crystal-clear waterfall. The campsite for the night is nestled alongside a gentle stream, providing a serene ambiance at an altitude of 3850m.

Day 8: Chebisa – Shomuthang

Embark on your trek by tackling a challenging ascent up a ridge to reach the Gogu La pass, standing at an elevation of 4500m. This demanding climb typically takes around four hours to complete. Along the way, keep a keen eye out for sightings of rare blue sheep, which are often spotted on the rocks near the pass’s summit. After conquering the pass, begin your descent through enchanting rhododendron bushes, eventually reaching a designated spot for a well-deserved lunch break. In the afternoon, continue along the trail, encountering intermittent ascents and descents. As you cross the stream and venture through the captivating rhododendron forests and yak herders’ camp, you will finally arrive at Shakepasa, situated at an altitude of 3980m. From there, prepare for a steep ascent on the northern side of the valley, passing by a couple of yak herders’ camps along the way. Finally, you will reach the campsite, nestled beside a gentle stream, offering a serene atmosphere at an elevation of 4250m.

Day 9: Shomuthang – Robluthang

Embark on your trek by traversing a trail adorned with exquisite edelweiss flowers, as you gradually ascend towards the Jari La pass, positioned at an altitude of 4700m. From this vantage point, you can feast your eyes upon the majestic snow-capped peak of Kangbum, soaring at a remarkable height of 6526m in the southeast direction. As you continue your journey, a descent awaits, leading you to the picturesque Tsarijathang valley, which serves as the summer abode for the rare Himalayan Takins, Bhutan’s national animal. Crossing the stream ahead, be prepared to potentially get wet, as the footbridge is often washed away. Once you have crossed the stream towards the left, the trail meanders uphill, eventually leading you to the rocky meadow campsite known as Robluthang, nestled at an altitude of 4200m.

Day 10: Robluthang – Lingmithang

Today, you will embark on a challenging journey to conquer the highest pass along this trek. Prepare yourself for a demanding climb, navigating through marshy patches, crossing a flowing stream, and maneuvering past marmot holes and moraine. The ultimate goal is to conquer the majestic Shingchen La pass, standing tall at an elevation of 5005m. Once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with an awe-inspiring vista of the snow-capped Gangchenta, also known as the Tiger Mountain, towering at an impressive 6840m, dominating the northern horizon with its sheer magnificence.

As you continue your expedition beyond the pass, you will descend along a rugged, rocky trail that winds its way through the moraine-strewn river valley, leading you to the Kango Chhu River. Be prepared for a narrow pathway, necessitating multiple stream crossings along the way. Embracing the natural beauty, you will traverse cedar forests until you arrive at Lingmithang, a picturesque scattered meadow nestled alongside the river. This serene campsite offers a captivating backdrop with the majestic Tiger Mountain standing tall in the distance, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere.

Day 11: Lingmithang – Laya

Atop a vast rockslide, a panoramic view awaits, treating you to a stunning sight of the glacial valley and the majestic snow-capped peaks of Tsenda Gang, soaring to an impressive 7100m. The campsite for the day is situated at Rodophu, located at an altitude of 4160m, just beyond a charming wooden bridge that spans the Rhodo Chhu river. Day 14: Rodophu – Narithang

From the vantage point of the pass, prepare to be captivated by awe-inspiring views of Mount Jumolhari and the stunning Tibetan borders. The sight is nothing short of breathtaking, leaving an indelible impression on your memory. Continuing your hike, you’ll traverse across a barren plateau, crossing paths with various yak trails that crisscross the landscape.

After some time, you will reach Narithang, your campsite for tonight. Nestled at an elevation of 4900m, this tranquil location offers a serene ambiance, allowing you to immerse yourself in the peacefulness of the surroundings. Day 15: Narithang – Tarina

Today’s adventure entails ascending the majestic Ganglakarchung Pass, reaching a remarkable altitude of 5120m. From the summit, prepare to be mesmerized by the panoramic views that unfold before your eyes. Marvel at the towering peaks of Kangbum (6530m), Tsendhen Gang (7100m), Teri Gang (7300m), and Jejegangphu Gang (7120m), which dominate the skyline with their awe-inspiring presence.

As you begin your descent, the trail leads you through massive moraines, guiding you to the edge of a sheer cliff. From this vantage point, you’ll witness a captivating sight—a glacial mass hanging from Teri Gang, giving birth to two turquoise-colored lakes nestled at its base. It’s worth noting that the lake on the left caused a significant flood downstream in Punakha in 1961, resulting in the destruction of the Mochu Bridge. The power and force of nature are awe-inspiring.

Continue your descent along a steep path that navigates the contours of the U-shaped valley, following the melodic flow of the Tangchu stream. Day 16: Tarina – Wochu

This challenging climb leads you to the esteemed Woche Village, which holds the distinction of being the first settlement in the captivating Lunana region. Perched at an altitude of 4350m, the village serves as a significant milestone along your journey. It symbolizes the gateway to the Lunana region, and as you gaze beyond the village, you catch a glimpse of the path that awaits you on your adventure towards Ledhi, which will unfold on the following day. Day 17: Woche – Lhedi

Embark on your ascent through the picturesque Woche valley, where the journey begins by crossing a small stream and navigating across a moraine. As you proceed, a descent ensues, leading you to a quaint wooden bridge spanning the graceful Woche Chu River. From there, you’ll embark on a gradual climb, passing by a crystalline glacial lake, until you reach the splendid Keche La pass at an elevation of 4650m. This vantage point offers magnificent views of the nearby mountains, including the striking three-pronged peaks of Jejegangphu Gang mountain, which stand as a testament to nature’s grandeur.

Continuing on, the trail descends towards the scenic Pochu Valley, guiding you to the charming Thaga village nestled at an altitude of 4050m. During autumn, as the late afternoon arrives, expect the presence of bitter cold winds that add to the unique character of this village. From Thaga village, your journey proceeds with a descent, passing through scattered settlements and enchanting rushing waterfalls. As you traverse along the bed of the Phochu River, you’ll eventually arrive at Lhedi (4200m). Lhedi village is home to essential community infrastructure, including a school, a Basic Health Unit, and a wireless station. Take a moment to appreciate the harmonious blend of nature and human presence in this serene setting before continuing your adventure.

Day 18: Lhedi – Thanza

Today’s trek offers a slightly easier terrain, allowing you to savor the journey with a relaxed pace. Following the gentle contours of the north bank of the Phochu River, you’ll meander through charming landscapes adorned with small farms, each adding a touch of rural beauty to the surroundings. As you continue, you’ll reach Chuzo Village, situated at an altitude of 4090m, around lunchtime. While passing through, take the opportunity to explore the fascinating Chezo Dzong, a cultural gem that holds stories of the region’s rich history.

Resuming your trek, you’ll then follow the trail along the riverbed, gradually ascending towards a steep hill that unveils a magnificent view of the Thanza valley. At an elevation of 4250m, this panoramic overlook offers a captivating vista that stretches before you. Take a moment to absorb the beauty of the landscape and appreciate the serenity of the Thanza valley as you continue your journey through this enchanting region.

Day 19: Thanza Explorations

Today, you are presented with two enticing options to spend your day. The first option is to immerse yourself in the captivating Thanza Village, a place seemingly frozen in time, reminiscent of a medieval society. Here, you will have the opportunity to witness a way of life that has remained untouched by modern influences. The villagers take pride in crafting their own garments, weaving and dyeing fabrics with their own hands. They showcase their unique fashion sense through intricately designed hats, boots, and jewelry. The village itself reflects the craftsmanship of its inhabitants, with homes constructed from sturdy stone walls, hand-hewn wooden shingles, and clay mortar. Surviving on a sustainable lifestyle, they trade grains for yak meat and cheese sourced from the lower valleys, creating a harmonious existence with their surroundings.

Alternatively, you can opt for an exhilarating hike through a trail adorned with small moraine rocks, leading you to a cluster of glacial lakes—Raphstreng Tsho and Thorthormi Tsho. These breathtaking lakes serve as the origins of the Phochu River, which holds significance in the history of Punakha. It caused a notable flood in 1994 due to a moraine outburst. As you bask in the tranquility of the lakes, your eyes will be drawn to the magnificent Table Mountain, locally known as Zongphu Gang. Rising to a towering height of 7100m, it presents a majestic wall of ice and snow that serves as a backdrop to the serene Thanza Village. Following a hearty breakfast, your day begins with a gradual ascent along the ridge, offering a magnificent panorama of the renowned Table Mountain and the enchanting Thanza valley below.
