A Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 200 per traveler per night will be charged. This fee goes towards free education, free healthcare, poverty alleviation, tourism infrastructure development, and maintaining Bhutan’s carbon-negative status. Children aged 6 to 12 at the time of travel receive a 50% concessionary discount on their SDF, while those who have not yet turned six are exempt from paying any SDF.

Day 1: Arrival Paro

Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, a T8 Untrodden Travels representative will be waiting outside the arrival terminal, holding a placard with your name on it. The representative will greet you in the traditional manner by offering a Trashi Khadar (greeting scarf), and will be your guide for the entire tour.

After lunch, you will embark on an exciting sightseeing tour around Paro, starting with a visit to the Ta Dzong Museum. This museum houses an impressive collection of religious relics, works of art, and handicrafts that offer a great introduction to Bhutan’s historical, cultural, and religious past. You will then visit the Rimpong Dzong, a majestic fortress-monastery that houses the famous painting of the great saint Milarepa. These dzongs are not only important religious centers but also serve as district administrative centers, which were once strategic forts. The tour is a great opportunity to explore Bhutan’s rich history and culture.

Day 2: Hike to Taktsang Monastery or Tiger’s Nest

After breakfast, embark on a hike to the famous Taktsang Monastery, also known as the Tiger’s Nest. This uphill trek takes approximately 1.5 to 2 hours and leads you to a height of almost 1 kilometer above the Paro valley floor. For those who cannot hike, a horse ride can be arranged for transfer up to the cafeteria. The monastery, built on a sheer cliff face 900 meters above the valley floor, offers a breathtaking view. According to legend, Guru Rinpoche meditated here for three months, bringing the teachings of the Buddhist Dharma to Bhutan in the 8th century.

In the afternoon, visit the almost fully reconstructed Drukgyel Dzong, built by Shabdrung to commemorate his victory against invading Tibetans in 1644. Enjoy stunning views of Mount Jomolhari, which appears as a stunning backdrop. On the return drive to Paro, visit other sights in the valley.

Day 3: Paro – Gunitsawa – Thangthangkha

Begin your day with an early breakfast, and then embark on a scenic drive of 35 kilometers north from your hotel in Paro valley to reach Sharna Zampa, the starting point of your trek. As you arrive, your trekking crew will be ready to greet you. Following a brief meeting, you will commence your trail, experiencing a mix of ascents and descents through enchanting pine, oak, and spruce forests. After around 2 hours of continuous hiking and crossing several streams, you will arrive at Shingkharap, a stone house nestled at an altitude of 3110 meters. Here, a delicious hot lunch awaits you on the left side of the river, after crossing the bridge. Continuing on, you will encounter a trail junction where the left path signifies an ancient trade route and invasion path from Tibet, while the right path leads to a wooden bridge (which we will follow). As you ascend through rhododendron forests and cross the bridge once again, you will arrive at our campsite situated at 3750 meters, surrounded by picturesque meadows.

Day 4: Thangthangkha – Jangothang

While today’s trekking distance may not be long, you will gain significant altitude as the trail ascends above the tree line, reaching 3700 meters. Setting off from the camp, you will begin by climbing for a while until you reach the army camp. From there, you will follow the river, delighting in the awe-inspiring views of the surrounding peaks as you venture above the tree line. The trail may get muddy in certain sections, but you will soon pass a mani wall and enter the domain of yaks. A warm and satisfying lunch awaits you within a yak herder’s camp. After replenishing your energy, you will continue your journey, passing by yak herder settlements such as Soe and Takethang. These areas are known for cultivating crops like barley, potatoes, and turnips. As you make your final approach, you will traverse a plateau and ascend a stream bed, eventually arriving at the remarkable Jangothang campsite, situated at an elevation of 4040 meters. From this vantage point, the views of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake are truly magnificent.

Day 5: Jangothang Explorations

On this day, you will dedicate your time to an essential acclimatization hike, lasting approximately four hours, towards the northern direction of the campsite. Although there is practically no designated trail, you will ascend an open and seemingly endless slope until you are rewarded with a breathtaking view of Mt. Jichu Drake (6989m). For those seeking an even more spectacular vantage point, it is possible to scramble further up to an altitude of 4895m, surpassing the height of Mount Blanc, and witness the astounding sight of Mount Jumolhari. Along the way, keep your eyes peeled for sightings of rare blue sheep, Himalayan rhubarb, griffon vultures, golden eagles, and the remarkable blue poppy. The Jangothang base is a vast grassy expanse with an ancient ruined fortress perched atop a hillock in the foreground, framed by the colossal presence of Mount Jumolhari and Jichu Drake. As the altitude here poses a risk of mountain sickness, it is highly recommended for all trekkers to rest and acclimatize at this stage. Whether you choose to explore the various hiking options available or simply unwind and relax within the camp, this day is bound to be etched in your memory as a truly remarkable experience.

Day 6: Jangothang – Lingshi

18KM | 6-7 HOURS | 660M ASCENT | 660M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4010M

The trail initially traces the stream for about half an hour before crossing a bridge to the right side. From there, embark on a climb towards the first ridge, which rewards you with a truly breathtaking vista of Jumolhari (7314m), Jichu Drake (6989m), and Tsherim Gang (6789m). Continuing onward, the path meanders through the valley, offering a relatively flat terrain for a while, until you ascend to the Ngye La pass at an altitude of 4700m. Once you have crossed the pass, a gradual descent awaits, allowing you to savor the panoramic views of the surrounding peaks and the majestic Lingshi Dzong. Tomorrow, you will have the opportunity to make a detour to explore this small fortress, perched atop a hill and overlooking the village of Lingzhi below. The campsite for the day is nestled at an altitude of 4010m, providing a serene and picturesque setting for your overnight stay.

Day 7: Lingshi – Chebisa

Explore the remarkable Lingshi Dzong, majestically positioned on a hilltop, offering commanding vistas of lush green hills, meandering rivers, and awe-inspiring peaks. With a rich history dating back centuries, Lingshi Dzong served as a vital rest stop for weary Buddhist pilgrims and as a fortified defense against Tibetan and Mongol invaders. Today’s journey is a pleasant and leisurely walk, allowing you to immerse yourself in the scenic beauty of the surrounding villages and the tranquil camps of yak herders. After a delightful lunch, a short stroll will lead you to Chebisa, a charming little village adorned with a captivating crystal-clear waterfall. The campsite for the night is nestled alongside a gentle stream, providing a serene ambiance at an altitude of 3850m.

Day 8: Chebisa – Shomuthang

Embark on your trek by tackling a challenging ascent up a ridge to reach the Gogu La pass, standing at an elevation of 4500m. This demanding climb typically takes around four hours to complete. Along the way, keep a keen eye out for sightings of rare blue sheep, which are often spotted on the rocks near the pass’s summit. After conquering the pass, begin your descent through enchanting rhododendron bushes, eventually reaching a designated spot for a well-deserved lunch break. In the afternoon, continue along the trail, encountering intermittent ascents and descents. As you cross the stream and venture through the captivating rhododendron forests and yak herders’ camp, you will finally arrive at Shakepasa, situated at an altitude of 3980m. From there, prepare for a steep ascent on the northern side of the valley, passing by a couple of yak herders’ camps along the way. Finally, you will reach the campsite, nestled beside a gentle stream, offering a serene atmosphere at an elevation of 4250m.

Day 9: Shomuthang – Robluthang

18KM | 6-7 HOURS | 700M ASCENT | 760M DESCENT | CAMP ALT 4200M

Embark on your trek by traversing a trail adorned with exquisite edelweiss flowers, as you gradually ascend towards the Jari La pass, positioned at an altitude of 4700m. From this vantage point, you can feast your eyes upon the majestic snow-capped peak of Kangbum, soaring at a remarkable height of 6526m in the southeast direction. As you continue your journey, a descent awaits, leading you to the picturesque Tsarijathang valley, which serves as the summer abode for the rare Himalayan Takins, Bhutan’s national animal. Crossing the stream ahead, be prepared to potentially get wet, as the footbridge is often washed away. Once you have crossed the stream towards the left, the trail meanders uphill, eventually leading you to the rocky meadow campsite known as Robluthang, nestled at an altitude of 4200m.

Day 10: Robluthang – Lingmithang

Today, you will embark on a challenging journey to conquer the highest pass along this trek. Prepare yourself for a demanding climb, navigating through marshy patches, crossing a flowing stream, and maneuvering past marmot holes and moraine. The ultimate goal is to conquer the majestic Shingchen La pass, standing tall at an elevation of 5005m. Once you reach the summit, you will be rewarded with an awe-inspiring vista of the snow-capped Gangchenta, also known as the Tiger Mountain, towering at an impressive 6840m, dominating the northern horizon with its sheer magnificence.

As you continue your expedition beyond the pass, you will descend along a rugged, rocky trail that winds its way through the moraine-strewn river valley, leading you to the Kango Chhu River. Be prepared for a narrow pathway, necessitating multiple stream crossings along the way. Embracing the natural beauty, you will traverse cedar forests until you arrive at Lingmithang, a picturesque scattered meadow nestled alongside the river. This serene campsite offers a captivating backdrop with the majestic Tiger Mountain standing tall in the distance, creating a truly enchanting atmosphere.

Day 11: Lingmithang – Laya

Day 12: Laya – Koena – Gasa

Descend to the army camp and join the Mo Chhu, the majestic Mother River of Punakha. Follow the river’s course until you cross a bridge. Once across, prepare for a series of ascents and descents through enchanting juniper and fir forests, leading you to the picturesque Koena at an altitude of 3800m. Here, you will meet your car and driver, who will transfer you to the charming village of Gasa. The scenic drive takes you through a forest adorned with fir, spruce, and rhododendron trees, gradually descending approximately 1250m until you reach Gasa. In Gasa, you can treat yourself to a rejuvenating dip in the Tshachu, the soothing hot spring located near your camp. This will provide a blissful relief from any muscle aches accumulated during the long trek. Spend the night at the Gasa camp situated at 2900m, marking the conclusion of this trek. Tomorrow, you will embark on a drive to the captivating Punakha valley.
